Today was cold cold cold! It was raining much of the day and since my jacket is broken I was soaked to the bone. It was a good intern day overall. Claire and I started the day cleaning and bleaching the horse trailer from Bob the new musk ox's trip to the center. Teal, one of the volunteers here, also volunteered with us today. I did a bus tour (Wiley the coyote was running along side the bus!) and had a relaxing bear shift. The bears were really good and Hugo was havin some fun in the water while Patron and J.B. took turns with me by the fence. I did get a little grossed out by the "cow scraps" (which they loved) that I had to cut up and give them as treats. Claire, Teal, and I also got some fresh brush for the babies, Jewelie, and Iggy and we gave the moose calves some new straw for their shed.
I met a really sweet girl from Homer today who spoke to me about watching Growing up Sitka Black-Tailed Deer (which Jewelie's the star of) on Animal Planet and how she fell in love with the center. She's hoping to intern here next summer. I hope it works out for her! Kelly said they don't get much local interest. She reminded me of myself talking to me about the program and trying to find out what she can do to be a strong applicant. I gave her my info so I can help her out like Vanessa did for me when she applies in the winter. One of the best things about working in the center is meeting all the different people and having great conversation. After work Scott and I went to Cooper Landing to do a Snickers presentation. When we got back to the center Tom, the wildlife biologist working on the wood bison restoration project here, was talking to Mike, Kelly, and us interns about his line of work and the project which was pretty interesting. The life he must live! Well I'm pretty pooped from the day, off to bed! No more 1 am feeding for the sitka deer fawns thank goodness. It's actually pretty dark out tonight. It's nice to be cuddled up in bed and actually warm and not soaked today haha. Here are some pics of Leia and Solo and their dinner : )
